Q. If Hindu is the proper name for the people living in India who believe in the Vedas?
A. Hindu is not the proper name for the people of India. It was first used by Parasis when they came to India across Sindhu river. In Persian, 'S' is pronounced as 'H'. They called Sindhu as Hindu and the area across Sindhu as Hindusthan or Hindustan. And the people living in Hindustan were called as Hindus. Thus, the very first time the word Hindu was used not in the sense of religion but in the sense of nationality. Since than the people living in Hindustan are known as Hindus. Hindus across Sindhu river were comparatively dark complexioned as compared to Arabs. So the Arabs invadors in the 8th century AD. associated the word Hindu with dark complexion and infidel or kafir. Basically it denotes nationality, just like the words Bharatiya or India. The glaring example of this fact is that till now the muslims going for Haz in Arabia are recorded there as Hindu Muslims. The same word was used immensely by all the foreigners in their writings. Later on in the presence of Muslims and Christians in India, the word Hindu was associated with religion.
Q. What is the difference between Dharma and Religion? A. There are two different terms Dharma and Religion. Religion is a sect and Dharma is the name of value system. Dharma helps sustain the very existence of things. dhÈra‡Èt dharma prÈhu. Just like hotness is the Dharma of Agni or fire, coldness is the Dharma of water. If hotness or cold ness of fire and water is taken out, their existence will be at stake. Similarly if human Dharma or the moral and ethical values are taken out of human beings they will no longer be the human beings, but the animals. Manu has enumerated 10 prominent human values. But now-a-days we are confusing Dharma with religon.
